Lucid Letters is a singer, songwriter, and producer from a small fishing town on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire, UK. She has been writing original music for more than two decades, and began teaching herself to record and produce her own songs over 15 years ago, using her brother’s desktop computer and a broken headset microphone.
Her influences include Imogen Heap, Utada Hikaru, Andrew Huang, and Nakata Yasutaka. She is drawn to producer artists, those who have a hand in both the songwriting and the production of their music. These days Lucid works from the Tiny Studio, a simple setup in her Fleetwood home where she cooks up many of her ideas.
Glittering Dreams is Lucid Letters’ interpretation of a the hot new electronic music microgenre known as ‘hit em’ that began taking X/Twitter by storm at the end of July running into August. Conceived by Drew Daniel of Matmos (or rather a mysterious rave girl in his dreams), hit em is characterised as being in 5/4 time at 212bpm with ‘crunched out sounds.’ Articles on the origins of hit em have begun popping up online from Stereogum, NPR, and The Guardian, sharing a wide range of examples of the genre from producers online.
“The song is certainly a departure from my previous more pop oriented work, but it represents my love of experimental electronic sounds.”
– Lucid Letters describing the vibe of her new track, Glittering Dreams
Lucid Letters discovered the magic of hit em through an Instagram post by experimental electronic mischief maker, Galen Tipton, who was sharing a clip of their track Electric Wasp Nest, a crunchy brain tickler in 5/4 time.
“When I (…) read up on the origins of the track, I just knew I had to make something like it!”
– Lucid Letters on discovering hit em through Galen Tipton
Lucid recalls, “When I heard what Galen Tipton had made and read up on the origins of the track, I just knew I had to make something like it! I started producing my own track that Sunday afternoon, and I was ready to hand it to my distributor by the Tuesday. You’ve got to move fast when it comes to things like this. Producers in the community are always ready to get in on some meme music action.
“The song is certainly a departure from my previous more pop oriented work, but it represents my love of experimental electronic sounds, and I’ve kept just a little of my voice so you know it’s me! ”
Glittering Dreams is her ethereal take on the genre, taking you on a journey through infectious grooves in asymmetrical meter, past a manic moment of gabber, and into an offbeat yet danceable conclusion.
Glittering Dreams is a song about dream states, creative flow, and sonic exploration. The lyrics, minimal as they are, encourage the listener to let the sounds and textures wash over them rather than trying to analyse anything too tightly. This blends beautifully with the inspiration for the song, a musician’s own dream that captured the imagination of other music makers around the world.
The track comes to streaming services and digital stores Friday, 16th August, 2024.
